Santorum: Puerto Ricans Should Learn English

March 18, 2012

Rick Santorum’s “English first” gaffe in Puerto Rico was a good illustration how unprepared he is to be President.

First, he was short on his facts.  He said that he wanted Puerto Ricans to learn English before joining the Union, just as had been required of the other states.  The only problem is, English was not a requirement for any other state’s admission to the Union.

Second, he obviously wasn’t briefed.  One of the first things a competent briefing would have covered was local sensitivity to English-firsters.  Either Santorum has not surrounded himself with professional staff or he ignores them.

Third, when asked a question on a subject he is not knowledgeable in and had not been briefed on, he ventured an answer anyway.  Not surprisingly, his foot landed in his mouth.  Imagine a comparable gaffe in some more sensitive field than the Republican primaries – imagine he was talking to North Koreans, or Israeli peace negotiators.

Ignorance of facts, disinterest in local issues, and willingness to speak despite that ignorance and disinterest is a very bad recipe for a President of the United States.
